Short bio

Andrea E. Schmidt (PhD) serves as Deputy Head of Department of Health Economics and Health Systems Analysis and Senior Health Expert at the Austrian National Institute of Public Health. She is also a research associate with the UN-affiliated European Centre for Social Welfare Policy and Research in Vienna, where she used to work as a researcher from 2010 to 2016. She was elected as board member of the Research Network on Ageing of the European Sociological Association in September 2021. She is also part of the EU Expert Group on Health System Performance Assessment, and was a scientific advisor on informal care to the Swiss Federal Institute of Public Health (2016-2020). She obtained her Master’s in Public Policy and Human Development from Maastricht University, Netherlands (2009), and her PhD in Economics and Social Sciences from Vienna University of Economics and Business, Austria (2016). She looks back at research stays at University of British Columbia, Vancouver (Canada), London School of Economics, and Stockholm University. Andrea E. Schmidt has authored and co-authored several peer-reviewed articles, book chapters and policy briefs in the field of equity in access to long-term care, long-term care financing, informal carers’ support, and health systems analysis. She is a member of the scientific board and activist with the national interest group of informal carers in Austria.

Project PHIRI: Primarily focused on health care, and the ways in which health information systems need to be built to be functional and meaningful, in particular in view of learnings from the pandemic.
