Next Steps in COVID-19 Response in Long-Term Care and Retirement Homes

9 November, 2020 at 12pm Eastern Time in Canada and 5pm UK Time

The COVID-19 pandemic hit the long-term care (LTC) and retirement home sector in Canada hard, with devastating effects, particularly in long-term care. Canada has had a higher reported national proportion of COVID-19 deaths for LTC residents than any other OECD country worldwide, with more than 80 percent of total COVID-19 deaths occurring in LTC homes. Within this stark reality, we have seen some organizations respond to the challenge of the pandemic in resourceful ways.

To help support the LTC and retirement home sector to rapidly share with and learn from each other, and strengthen pandemic preparedness, the Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement and the Canadian Patient Safety Institute launched LTC+ Acting on Pandemic Learning Together (LTC+). As part of the program, we are running a virtual learning series – Next Steps in COVID-19 Response in Long-Term Care and Retirement Homes – to bring people together to share promising practices and learn from others tackling similar challenges. This webinar series will focus on six key areas that have the potential to reduce the risk of future outbreaks or mitigate their effects: preparation; prevention; people in the workforce; pandemic response and surge capacity; planning for COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 care; and presence of family. This webinar series complements the LTC+ program but is open to anyone who would like to join.

The next monthly webinar will be held on 9 November and focus on People in the Workforce. Dr. Lesley Wiesenfeld (Psychiatrist in Chief, Sinai Health, Canada) will discuss staff psychological health & safety and Deba Hafizi (Knowledge Mobilization Officer, CADTH, Canada) will share best practices to support staff during these challenging times.
